In recent years, the call to reform research evaluation systems in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) has grown louder, driven by the increasing recognition that traditional assessment models are ill-suited to the epistemic practices and societal missions of these fields. The dominance of metrics such as journal impact factors and citation counts, privileges forms of output and circulation which are often foreign to SSH research. As many scholars have observed, these metrics tend to overlook the rich diversity of scholarly communication in SSH – ranging from books and critical editions to exhibitions, policy briefs, and artistic interventions – and that they disadvantage work published in languages other than English.
